The perfect activity to do on your way to or from the Daintree
Itinerary

Hook-a-Barra at the award-winning Daintree Saltwater Barramundi Farm offers fishers and non-fishers the chance to catch one of Queensland's most iconic fish in an idyllic tropical setting.

The Hook-a-Barra fishing experience lasts for one hour and includes an Introduction to Barramundi Fishing tuition session; all equipment; catch and release pond fishing; assistance from our expert fishing guides and access to special viewing tanks.

We were greeted by 2 of the lads who run the Hook A Barra Fishing experience who were full of knowledge and genuine nice blokes. Found the experience quite educational and learnt a thing or 2 about sustainable fishing and produce. For the price you pay it would be good to be able to flick some lures a little longer but the money does not go to waste. Highly recommend!

Great opportunity to learn about the bara and get up close with the animals. Very informative demonstration of just how quick this fish can be. The equipment was great and easy to use, staff was friendly and happy to help all members of our young family. Didn’t land any of the monsters but got the chance to fish our fresh dinner straight out of the pond!

Fun way to experience landing a big barramundi. Friendly staff...easy informative session on the bara farm...then straight into the fishing ..good equipment...as much or little instruction as you need....exciting when the barra bites...they assist you to land it and time to take photos before releasing....bought a piece of barra before we left....made a superb fish dinner.

An excellent experience with a lot of help from Lee and Patrick. They went out of their way to help you catch a fish.

Wanted to catch a barra because it was on my bucket list. Unfortunately I am visiting out of barra season and saw this sign along the road. Stopped and thought would give it a try. Guys there were really helpful and knew much about the barra. Plenty of barra in the ponds and some were huge. Managed to land 2 in my 60 minute allocation, the first 77cm and the second about 55cm. The staff are willing to help out even the novice fisher.

Great guides who know their stuff, professional equipment, terrific example of sustainability in the fishing industry with well kept fish in a wonderfully clean and manageable environment. And great fun! Would definitely recommend!

Had a fantastic time. Staff were attentive and informative. Hooked a barra or 2. Not just for kids. Give it a try

A great morning, enjoying 6 bites and near misses followed by two good catches. A very engaging time which also highlighted just how elusive these fish are. The staff were excellent, and really tried to help me have success. Thanks. I’ll be back.

Boys had 2 great afternoons catching some big Barra. Team were friendly and helpful and patient with the kids.

Excellent experience, kids had a blast, Bec in the office area was amazing with our kids and Richard and Jack were fantastic with there assistance around the ponds, it was middle of winter and fish were inactive but they ensured our kids got onto good fish by moving groups to feeding ponds around the place. For southern NSW kids who just wanted to catch a Barra badly they made our holiday special with there effort and friendly treatment would recommend to anyone who has fishing mad kids the place is great 10/10

We travelled to Port Douglas / Mossman region with our family and saw Hook-a-Burra farm whilst driving to Daintree Village. We are so glad as it become one of our special family highlights of our time in North Queensland. It is eco-friendly which is important and we learnt alot about the difference between saltwater and freshwater farms. They have one area with the large fish for catching and give you all the equipment you need and guidance. It was an incredible experience for the kids to see a barramundi jump out of the water and the feeling of reeling one in. It is a catch and release program and humane for the fish. Chris and Jack were patient with the kids, one of which had no fishing experience. They made the time interesting for the kids. We wish were were staying longer to do the tour and also sample some of the produce they sell.

We had a great time here. The fish were being slow, but they are animals and doing what animals do. My kids both managed to catch a Barra with the help of our guides. They gave so much advice, and clearly knew what they were talking about. Great morning. They are already asking to come back and do it again.

Sivonne P June 2021

Excellent guides made the experience a wonderful time that my kids decided was the best thing we have ever done so far. The guides made sure both my kids caught something and were really helpful at giving all the advice we needed.

We had a great experience catching a Barra We had a good instructor who showed us the way to hook a Barra We after 40 mins we had booked a Barra who gave a great fight to bring into the bank Photo time and then released back to the pond Another experience ticked off the bucket list

What a well-managed and interesting facility. Lee, our guide, was extremely helpful and had us catching Barra in no time. Great to see how these beautiful fish are farmed and cared for, allowing for healthy and sustainable management of this resource. I'd strongly recommend considering this as an activity to do when up in far North Queensland.

Have just had an amazing morning with Leigh at Hook a Barra doing the total Barra experience. The package included the guided Farm Tour, Leigh was a wealth of knowledge and I got to see the Barra harvest, followed by an entertaining hour battling witts with Barramundi up to a metre long. The farm tour also included a tasting plate of different ways to enjoy eating Barramundi, in all it was worth every cent of the admission and I will be comming back with my friends in the near future. Many thanks Leigh.

You’d think “what fun would it be when you shoot fish in a barrel”? Well, you’d be wrong and you’d be amazed how not as easy to hook a Barra in a pond than you think. However, it top fun and the staff is most helpful in every way. The gear supplied is good and the environment is beautiful and safe. Just a short drive from Port Douglas, it is a top spot for the family, especially kids who want to hook a fish. Highly recommended.

Fantastic first fishing experience for our 9 and 11 years old grandchildren. Before coming we were having a discussion "What happens if I did not catch a fish", and our negative expectations were destroyed by very friendly, professional and supportive team. Kids learn some fishing skills and even catch 2 fish. We can`t forget the happiest faces and their shining eyes. This only happens because of the wonderful team, who was above and beyond to do everything, possible and not, to make boys catching the fish. Thank you Team, thank you, Richard, for the all happy moments and a great afternoon!
