Pass By: Darwin, Darwin, Top End, Northern Territory

The streets of Darwin CBD are home to many buildings that have connections to Darwin's past and many are still in use today. Stories of the past and the people who ensured Darwin became an important part of current day Northern Territory are aplenty. Public artworks dot the route.

Stop At: Star Village 32 Smith St, Darwin, Northern Territory 0800 Australia

This former open-air cinema is one of the few original buildings from pre-Cyclone Tracy. Though it has been converted to a chic retail hub, your guide will point out its historic features and share with you its stories of old.

Duration: 10 minutes

Stop At: Brown's Mart Theatre, 12 Smith St, Darwin, Northern Territory 0800 Australia

This building has remained part of Darwin's social culture for over 100 years. Your guide will share a few of its stories as you peruse the exterior of this site.

Duration: 10 minutes

Stop At: The Old Town Hall, 13 Smith St, Darwin, Northern Territory 0800 Australia

Many of Darwin's pioneers have passed through this site. Now in ruins, the Old Palmerston Town Hall provides modern-day Darwin with a visible reminder of its past residents.

Duration: 10 minutes

Stop At: Administrator of the Northern Territory, 29 Esplanade, Darwin City NT 0800, Australia

These beautifully restored buildings and their gardens encapsulate life from the early years of Darwin. Today, they are used as offices for The Administrator of the Northern Territory.

Duration: 10 minutes

Stop At: Parliament House, Mitchell St, Darwin, Northern Territory 0800 Australia

A grand building presiding over Darwin Harbour. Here, you'll learn more about the self-governing modern city of Darwin.

Duration: 10 minutes

Stop At: Bicentennial Park, Darwin, Northern Territory 0800 Australia

Bicentennial Park, overlooking Darwin Harbour, provides residents and visitors with green space to enjoy leisure and recreation activities. There are many hidden treasures dotting the area, reminding us of early Darwin, WWII, life pre-Cyclone Tracy. You may even see local birdlife.

Interesting details regarding the history in and around Darwin. The walking tour was done at an easy pace, very enjoyable.

Edward_N October 2021

Our guide John was outstanding. This was more than a guided walk, it was a wonderful expose of the recent history of the north of Australia, told in a manner that kept us enthralled throughout the walk.

Sarah_C September 2021

John was an excellent guide. Would recommend this tour for all ages and groups. John was very goid at imparting his extensive knowledge.

JanBob August 2021

Excellent guide Gave us some interesting and detailed information about the heritage buildings in the CBD, Thank you John

Sharyn_S August 2021

I found the guide really interesting. There was so much I did not know about Darwin and he really opened my eyes to a lot of things. He put in a lot of effort and made the walk enjoyable and informative.

A nice early start in the mall to beat the heat. John had plenty of knowledge and historical information to share. A few local Darwin secrets explored on an easy walk around town.

topics well researched. Clear summary of history and remaining heritage buildings. Pace of Walking was fine

Anna_M May 2021

This would have to be the worst tour that i have ever been on in all my years of travelling. All the reviews before we booked mentioned how wonderful John was. Unfortunately we had Brian. The tour should have been renamed "the life of Brian tour". He only spoke about himself and his second wife Janice and their life in Darwin. He was a lovely man but that was not what we booked for. There were the max of 6 on the tour and the 2 others not in our group left after 40 minutes. We were just so disappointed that they made the decision to do it before us. A total waste of our holiday time and money and Brian told us ABSOLUTELY Nothing about Darwin and the few questions we asked his response was "well i must look that up"

Joy_P May 2021

Brian was punctual friendly. Unfortunately he was diffuse to understand and the information he imparted at times was inaccurate. Brian consentrated a lot on trivial information and not enough of the historical background. He was long on personal info and short on factual history of Darwin. We felt that this was an expensive tour and not worth the $’s

Trishinthegarden51 May 2021

The guide really makes the experience on tours such as these. Regretfully our guide, Brian, was inclined to talk more about his life and his experiences than move on with the tour. We were kept standing in one spot for the first 30 minutes of the tour while he spoke about his Cyclone Tracy and work experience, which was initially interesting however, we were keen to get on with the tour. He has obviously led an interesting life in Darwin but a walking tour is what we had signed up for. Another half an hour got us to visit two sites in the mall and then with some coaching we moved on with the walk, but with insufficient time to really see the subsequent sites. Overall, we were disappointed with the tour. Brian had some aids to show but at times they were hard to see and often they faced him, rather than the group. From previous review of the walk, it sounds like John is the tour guide to request.

John and Narida were amazing and went beyond what was expected. The alerted me on the Sunday evening that restricts had changed in the NT. They offered their support to help in what every way they could. Sent the NT press release and where I could get tested for Covid-19 well I was negative so our tour was back on track just delayed by a day or two. John was full of knowledge about Darwin and I leant so much that I would have not know if I hadn't taken the walk. Thank you Narida and John your made my trip to Darwin a positive one.

Martin T November 2020

Fantastic way to start the day. John was a fantastic tour guide and was able to highlight so many things we would not have noticed. I recommend that you give this one and go as you will learn so much. Thanks

John_ZA1 October 2020

A really informative walk through Darwin city centre. Out host (John) was very knowledgeable and was able to answer all our questions. The pace was good and not too rushed, which we really enjoyed. Highly recommended

cateyjade July 2020

The walk Darwin tour was exceptional. I learnt so many things about Darwin's history and got a real sense of the challenges it has overcome. I look forward to doing a different tour again soon.

SgCouple March 2020

We enjoyed the walking tour with John around Darwin city. It’s was a small group, we only had another couple with us. The pace was good. John was knowledgeable. We wouldn’t have learnt as much about Darwin otherwise.

John is a fun and knowledgeable guide. It is such a special experience to see Darwin through a locals eyes. Thanks John. Highly recommend!

MarianS964 October 2019

This was s very enjoyable and informative tour. Because of the heat, we started early in the morning, which was a good thing to do. Guide was knowledgeable and shared interesting and humorous anecdotes. Well paced. Plenty of opportunities for questions and dialogue. Probably the best, and most informative tour we did whilst in Darwin.

Memento_Mori_55 September 2019

In an entertaining couple of hours John walked us around Darwin and gave us a good historical background of Darwin from John McDougall Stuart initial discovery, through the second world war bombing to today. We usually do this kind of walk when we travel overseas to get a grounding on the city we are visting and Walk Darwin is as good as any we have done.

minakadina September 2019

Excellent walk. Very pleasant guide John! Well researched, interesting and the time flew by. Highly recommendable.

Joanne M September 2019

Just spent an enjoyable 2 hours with John While he showed us a small sample of what Darwin has to offer. Started in the cool of the day finished around 10.30 so still plenty of time left in the day. John was fun and informative without being boring. He showed us a great oversight of the history of Darwin. Easy walking pace, suitable for most levels of fitness. Highly reccomend

Kjbarker September 2019

This is an excellent introduction to Darwin, even for someone who's lived here for nearly a year. We didn't walk very far (a few blocks), but so much information & so many sites were packed in over the two hours. Our very knowledgable & entertaining guide, John, knows Darwin & its history well, with lots of variety in topics and sites. Highly recommended and suitable for all ages.

jelenam106 July 2019

Darwin heritage walk was very informative and interesting. You will hear a lot about past history but also the present.

John F July 2019

If you're interested in history, this is a great introduction to Darwin. Our guide, John, is the subject matter expert-he really brought the topic to life. I only wish I'd taken his tour the first day of our stay in Darwin and that we'd stayed longer. There's lots to do and 3 days was not enough!

Christine L July 2019

Our guide Betty was great! She gave us so much history about this city. We were able to cover a lot in the 2 hours. Interesting and worthwhile.
