We have all probably had a little yellow rubber duck at one point in our lives, and after all the years they have been with us, there must be an unimaginable number of them “floating around” (pardon the pun) in the world. Rubber ducks first became popular around the 1940s and have taken bath times by storm. Even Queen Elizabeth II apparently has one in her bathroom in Buckingham Palace, it was reported by a workman who carried out some repairs a few years ago. Yellow rubber ducks enjoyed a renewed surge in popularity in the late 60s when Sesame Street’s Ernie sang his famous “Rubber Duckie” song, and they are even a popular collector’s item, with the record for the largest number of different ducks being awarded to a collector who had amassed 1439 of the little creatures! In 2013, the yellow rubber duck was inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame. Popular for use in games such as Hook-a-Duck and Duck Races, often organised for charities all across the world, these cheerful little toys will probably be with us forever.
